November 16, Tuesday LISBON On arrival in Lisbon, a private coach & driver will take your group to stay 4 nights at AsJanelas Verdes, a beautiful 18th-century mansion, once the residence of the famous Portuguese novelist, Eça de Queiró and located near the National Ancient Art Museum. www.asjanelasverdes.com/ Dinner is included at your hotel this evening. November 17, Wednesday LISBON We'll meet our guide this morning and set out on a 3-hour private guided walking tour through Lisbon. Gain local insight into Lisbon on this tour that covers historic highlights, culinary delights, and Portuguese culture. The formidable history and ancient roots makes Lisbon the most visited Portuguese city. The Palace Square mirrors the great maritime past of the Portuguese capital and shows its past glory in all its majesty. Old marble steps leading up to the square from Rio Tejo can still be seen today. The old palace that once stood in the square was almost completely ruined after the earthquake of 1755. The 19th century triumphal arch, leading to Rua Augusta (one of Lisbon’s main pedestrian and shopping areas) is skillfully decorated with statues of famous historical personages among which can be seen Vasco da Gama, the famous explorer and Marquis do Pombal is also one of the square main attractions. Pombal Marquis square is situated between Liberty Avenue and the Eduardo VII gardens. In the middle of the square is the statue of Pombal, who was in charge of Lisbon’s reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. St. George Castle, was conquered by the Moors in 1147. The castle stretches over an area of approximately 6000 square meters and has several towers, a dry moat and two squares divided by an internal wall with a connecting door. Today this ancient hilltop bastion is a home to many families. Visitors can walk around its spacious gardens, climb its towers and enjoy the amazing view of the city. Afternoon at leisure/dinner on your own (could do an evening of Fado, the traditional Portuguese music—or maybe just a song or two.) November 18, Thursday SINTRA & CASCAIS Today we will meet a private coach, driver & guide who will take you for a tour to Sintra & Cascais. Sintra is one of the most delightful places to be found in Portugal. With its extensive range of green craggy hills - the Serra de Sintra - so picturesquely situated and offering incredible views of the coastline, Sintra is indeed "a garden of the earthly paradise.” Sintra’s Old Town was described by Byron as "the most pleasing in Europe", but the town also includes valuable archaeological remains, particularly from the Roman period, ancient manor houses, beautiful churches and three National Palaces - Palácio da Vila, Palácio da Pena and Palácio de Queluz - and several municipal museums Nestled along the Lisbon coastline, Cascais was formerly a small fishing village and is now a thriving beach resort. It has a charming old town area where history has been preserved and a new marina area which is a haven for luxury yachts, hip bars and restaurants. Only 25kms west of Lisbon this was where Europe’s royalty retreated during World War II. Today it is a playground for the rich and famous and a weekend getaway for city dwellers. It has a lovely temperate climate, champion golf courses, idyllic beaches as well as being home to one of Europe’s largest casinos. Dinner on your own. November 19, Friday LISBON
